Dedication of “Burning Flame” Sculpture by Esteemed Diné Artist Harkin Lucero, Jr.
March 11, 2026 – 12:00 p.m.
Center for Student Success, Creekside Plaza
The College will host a public dedication ceremony for Burning Flame, a striking new granite sculpture gifted by renowned Diné (Navajo) artist and Elder Harkin Lucero, Jr. The event will take place on March 11, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. in the Center for Student Success at Creekside Plaza. All community members are warmly invited to attend.
Carved from 8,000 pounds of granite sourced from a sacred mountain in Taos, New Mexico, Burning Flame reflects Lucero’s belief that sculpture is “prayer in motion.” The piece is intended to serve as a beacon of inspiration for future generations, honoring tradition while welcoming new opportunities for reflection and connection on campus.
Harkin Lucero, Jr. is a celebrated sculptor of Navajo descent whose work spans major public installations throughout the American Southwest and California. Widely recognized for both his artistic mastery and humanitarian service, Lucero’s honors include the Eagle Emmy Award, the Oakland City Council Humanitarian Award, and induction into the Bojack Native Hall of Fame.
The College is deeply honored to receive this significant cultural and artistic gift and looks forward to celebrating its installation with students, employees, and the broader community.
