Athletics Director Sponsors Mariners Home Game Passes for Veterans at COM

To honor the service and sacrifices of veterans, Kinesiology and Athletics Department Director Ryan Byrne is offering COM veterans an annual pass to Mariners regular-season home games. Byrne recognizes that this is a small token of appreciation and recognition from the department but believes that intercollegiate athletic events can provide a great opportunity for socialization and camaraderie. Contact the Veteran and Military Student Resource Center or Marijke Gray at (415) 485-9410 for information about veterans home game passes.

Marin Veterans Day Program - November 11

The Veterans Resource Center will also present a wreath on Veterans Day at the Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium. COM Representatives participating in the ceremony include Marijke Gray (veterans resource specialist), Hiroshi Yamaguchi (current student, retired Air Force), Kevin Colgate (ASCOM/ESCOM), and a COM ambassador.

The Veterans Day event begins at 9:30 a.m. with music featuring San Andreas High School senior Alexis Reed and patriotic songs played by the Las Gallinas Valley Sanitary District Non-Marching Band (aka the Sewer Band). Cadets from the U.S. Air Force Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) based at Novato High School will present the colors. The program continues outdoors in front of the memorials on the Avenue of the Flags. A moment of silence will be observed at 11:11 a.m. in honor of the 99th anniversary of the World War I armistice agreement, which was signed at the 11th minute of the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Wreaths will be laid at the foot of the statues to honor fallen comrades. Refreshments will be served in the Redwood Foyer of the Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium after the outdoor event.

Phyllis Gould of Fairfax will be the keynote speaker. During World War II, Gould worked as a welder at the Kaiser Shipyards in Richmond and was one of the first women to achieve journeyman classification among her union cohorts. Gould worked on crews that built Victory and Liberty cargo and transport ships, and she has been at the forefront of a movement to have the federal government recognize a national Rosie the Riveter Day.

The annual Veterans Day event, presented by the Marin County United Veterans Council and sponsored by the County of Marin, honors all Americans who served in the line of duty with our military forces, with a special emphasis on Marin's own heroes. For more information, contact Ray Mullin of the Marin County United Veterans Council at rayzer44@yahoo.com
