On May 1, 2021, College of Marin (COM) will have its yearly College Success Saturday for graduating high school seniors. The event will provide students with everything they need to be at the front of the line to register for their classes this fall.
This is the second year the event will be held virtually. It was so successful last year, COM plans to always have a virtual option for students in the future.
Register today for College Success Saturday! The sooner you register, the sooner you can complete what you need to register for classes.
High school students who attend this event will learn everything they need to know about registering for classes. Academic counselors will offer short drop-in appointments and Student Ambassadors will assist students in setting up their MyCOM Portal and email which is how the College will communicate with them.
Another important part of College Success is that each student who has completed the necessary steps of developing a Student Educational Plan and the College Success Orientation will be given Priority Registration which allows students to get in front of the registration line, and get into the classes they need. While it’s not a guarantee, it gives students a big leg up, especially with getting into general education classes new students often need that fill up quickly.
“Once you register, you are part of the COM community,” says Director of School and Community Partnerships Anna Pilloton. She’s witnessed several College Success events. She finds that by the time students leave, they’ve made some new friends, learned about important services and resources to help them succeed, and feel like they’ve “crossed the threshold into being a college student,” states Pilloton.
There will be a parent orientation for family and friends to learn how best to support a college-going student through their transition from high school to college and beyond. Parent orientations are available in English or Spanish. The orientations offer a chance to ask questions and obtain resources and information to help support a college student’s success.
Those who attend will also learn about the different student support services COM offers, including financial aid, learning communities, and other opportunities that make COM the number one community college in the state, and fifth in the nation according to Academic Influence’s independent assessment on community colleges.
One key opportunity is COM’s innovative Summer Bridge program that represents a partnership with the local community-based organization, 10,000 Degrees. Held for twelve days over a three-week period in June or July, the program helps students learn how to be a successful college student. It gives students in-depth information on support services, knowledge of the campus, and a sense of confidence to start their first day of college on the best possible footing.
Here's the itinerary of events planned for May 1 and a student’s first step towards becoming a college student — College Success Saturday offers this and more!
