Upgraded Track Facilities and New Tennis Courts Open at COM

KENTFIELD / NOVATO, CA—May 30, 2018—On Monday, June 4, College of Marin (COM) will open access to the Kentfield Campus track and tennis courts. Upgrades at the track include a new synthetic turf field with natural cork infill for soccer and lacrosse, new long jump, triple jump, and high jump areas; and new bleachers. Four new tennis courts, relocated adjacent to the track, will open as well.

"The new artificial turf is beautiful,” stated Athletic Director Ryan Byrne. “It’s going to be a lot less maintenance and we will be able to use it during the rainy season. We are using a natural cork infill product that does not radiate heat or come with the health concerns like we have seen with crumb rubber."

In order to protect and maintain the investment in these facilities, Byrne says that commonsense rules are posted and will be in effect. Especially important for increasing the longevity of synthetic fields are regulations that prohibit pets and soda or sugary drinks of any type.

While the College is opening up the track and field for public use in June, it’s important to note that there is still an active construction site next to the facilities. Construction work on the baseball field is ongoing and may, at times, present some logistical challenges for those utilizing the track and tennis courts. The College is working with contractors to minimize the impact on those accessing the facilities.

“The baseball field will be under construction during the next six to seven months, so we ask for everyone's patience and understanding while we work out some logistical issues that may come up during that time,” says Byrne. “We are looking forward to a unified athletics complex that includes a centrally located restroom."

The baseball field is scheduled for completion in January 2019.

Track and tennis court facilities will be open for public use from sunrise to sunset seven days a week, when not in use for College classes or other scheduled events. Organized sport and training activities (including lessons on the tennis courts) is by College permit only. Permits may be obtained online through Facilitron.
