Due to gusty winds and dry conditions, PG&E has announced a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) in Marin affecting approximately 10,000 customers.
The Kentfield and Indian Valley Campuses are NOT within the affected areas. At this time, campuses will remain open and classes will be in session.
However, this power shutoff may affect up to 39 of the 47 counties PG&E services, and we understand that many of our employees and students live in areas that will be affected by the outage. If you have a personal and/or family situation related to the PSPS that prevents you from coming to campus, be sure to let your supervisor or instructor know.
The following Marin County cities will be affected (as of October 8 at 1:21 p.m.):
Bolinas
Fairfax
Mill Valley
Muir Beach
Olema
Sausalito
Stinson Beach
Additionally, the following Bay Area counties will be affected by the PSPS:
Alameda
Contra Costa
Napa
Solano
Sonoma
PG&E will begin to shut off power to at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, October 9, with all power in the affected areas shut off by 4 a.m. PG&E anticipates work to inspect and repair power lines prior to re-energizing will take up to five days. Power will come back incrementally over the five days—theoretically, all power should be restored by Tuesday, October 15, at noon.
This planned PSPS outage could impact the commute and/or result in other family considerations (e.g. closure of care centers, schools, etc.). For information relating to PG&E’s PSPS program, please see: www.pge.com/pspsupdates.
In the meantime, prepare at home. Resources are available at ReadyMarin.org and Prepareforpowerdown.com. For those with access and functional needs, you can find additional resources on Marin HHS’s Preparing for Extended Outages webpage or Ready.gov’s Access and Functional Needs webpage.
All employees and students are encouraged to verify that their information in COM Connect is accurate (M00# or student ID required). Everyone should also sign up for emergency alerts from AlertMarin, Nixle and PG&E's PSPS Alerts to stay informed at home.
At a minimum, to prepare for a PSPS outage at home:
- Charge your cell phone, laptop, and other devices
- Fuel or charge your personal vehicle
- Have extra cash, medications, some water, and non-perishable food on hand
- Have a disaster go-bag, plan, and grab-and-go list
Community Resource Centers
To support customers in the impacted counties, PG&E will open Community Resource Centers in multiple locations. They provide restrooms, bottled water, electronic device charging, and air-conditioned seating. Mobile resource stations (vans), when available, will provide bottled water, phone-charging, and the latest information for customers. A list of Community Resource Centers is included in the October 8 news bulletin from PG&E.
