COM Joins Marin County Organizations in Celebrating Carter’s 93rd Birthday
NOVATO / KENTFIELD, CA—September 21, 2017—On October 1, 39th U.S. President Jimmy Carter turns 93 years old, and College of Marin (COM) is one of the Marin County organizations sponsoring events and festivities to celebrate and recognize Carter’s lifetime achievements.
At the September 12, 2017, meeting the Novato City Council proclaimed October 1 through 8 President Jimmy Carter Week as a way to honor the former president’s commitment to clean energy and the environment, peace, democracy, human rights, social justice, humanitarian values, and his work with Habitat for Humanity, which recently built low-income housing in Novato. On September 26, the Marin County Board of Supervisors will do the same.
Along with COM, Community Media Center of Marin, Marin Artists Network, Associated Students of College of Marin (ASCOM), Marin Democrats, and S.E.E.D. are sponsoring the week of activities highlighting Carter’s vision and leadership and celebrating his birthday.
A screening of the film A Road Not Taken will be held on Monday, October 2, from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Marin Center in San Rafael. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with the Swiss filmmakers and executive director of Ocean Conservation Research, Michael Stocker.
During his term as the 39th U.S. president, Carter was a pioneer in implementing clean energy and environmental conservation policies. As a private citizen, he has focused on democracy, peace and conflict resolution, human rights, and public health around the world through the Carter Center in Atlanta. Carter is a champion of social justice and environmental sustainability, and his values align with COM’s mission.
The College’s co-sponsorship of the Jimmy Carter Jamboree is one of the many activities and initiatives that exemplify COM as a leader in this arena. Other endeavors include the Indian Valley Organic Farm and Garden, partnering with Tesla to install commercial battery storage units on both campuses, and switching to 100 percent renewable energy with MCE’s Deep Green.

About 39th U.S. President Jimmy Carter
Often considered the father of the Solar Age for his visionary solar and wind energy initiatives, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1999, and the United Nations’ Human Rights Prize in 1998. He served as a naval officer for seven years and works with Habitat for Humanity still today through Habitat’s Carter Work Project.
