College of Marin (COM) and the Marin County Office of Education have joined forces again in 2019 to offer an expanded program of summer Career Academies for high school students in Marin County.
Career Academies are short but intensive college courses that offer students the chance to explore their career interests while gaining an understanding of industry opportunities and nuances. The goal of this fun, hands-on learning, is to help high school students home in on specific fields of study that best match their interests and aptitudes.
With four new academies added, there are now 10 academies offered this summer. Each lasts 4 to ten days and students can apply–and be accepted–to more than one academy.
The 2019 Career Academies include Career Exploration, Criminal Justice and Society, The Culinary World: An Inside Look, CyberPatriots, Digital Gaming, Education Careers, Entrepreneur/Start-Up, Health Careers Exploration, Intro to Health Occupations, and SunPower Solar Energy.
Career Academies are open to all Marin County high school students. The application period opens Monday, April 1, and students must complete the online application by May 5 at 5 p.m.
All academies offer free enrollment, with only nominal costs. Of the 10 academies, six provide current high school students with the opportunity to earn college credits without paying the $46/unit enrollment fee (recent high school graduates who are accepted to the academies will be required to pay the enrollment fee).
The award-winning Career Academy program was launched in 2016 and has grown each year. The program was started as a complement to COM’s College Credit Program (CCP) for high school students, whereby students can enroll in up to 11 units of regular classes each semester and pay no enrollment fees.
