KENTFIELD, CA—May 23, 2017— As the academic year draws to a close, the College of Marin (COM) Athletics Department is ramping up for off-season summer classes in preparation for the fall 2017 season. During the spring semester, the department rounded out its coaching staff with three stellar additions.

Michael Crivello Named Head Coach for Men’s Soccer

Michael Crivello, a former starter and two-time All-League Selection at the University of San Francisco, has been named men’s soccer coach at College of Marin. He takes over for Jacob Morrison, who left the program this spring.

The San Rafael native attended Terra Linda High School and played youth soccer for the Dixie Stompers. He looks forward to using the summer to outline his vision for the COM soccer program.

“I am very excited to be at College of Marin and in a position to lead the Men's Soccer program,” said Crivello. “I cannot wait to connect with current and future players and build a program that the Marin soccer community can be proud of.”

Crivello has been the head varsity boys’ soccer coach at Terra Linda High School since 2007 and holds a national diploma and advanced national diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). He looks to attain his B license from U.S. Soccer in the next year.

The timing change of the local high school soccer season presented COM with a great opportunity to hire a top-notch local high school coach. Athletic Director Ryan Byrne is eager to see the positive influence of his talent and dedication on the team and its coaching staff.

“He has had a tremendous impact on hundreds of student-athletes in our community over the years,” says Byrne. “Coach Crivello understands what goes into running a successful program here in Marin and has demonstrated a long-term commitment to this community.”

Andrew Jones Named Head Coach for Women’s Soccer

During the fall 2017 season, Andrew Jones served as interim head coach of the women’s soccer team. A former player at College of the Canyons, Jones has coaching experience at Lyon College in Arkansas as well as Sonoma State University.

After having only one returning freshman last season, seven starters from 2016 will return in fall 2017.

“Our team is excited as we are preparing for the upcoming 2017 season,” said Jones. “Our core returners along with a handful of experienced newcomers are eager and hungry to hit the ground running next fall, in hopes of competing for a top spot in the Bay Valley Conference.”

Jones was a high school All-Conference Selection and received his bachelor’s degree from California State Northridge. His coaching experience includes time at Petaluma High School and Santa Rosa High School in addition to his work at Sonoma State University and Lyon College.

"Andrew brings a great student-centered perspective and approach,” said Byrne. “He has gone through the matriculation process as a community college transfer student-athlete himself and he has accumulated a lot of experience at all levels. He is so passionate and energetic; it’s just really exciting to see what he is going to do in developing the program. The kind of positive energy he brings is contagious and we are very optimistic about the future of the program."

Jones begins his second season of competition in August.

Scott Davis Named Head Coach for College of Marin Women’s Basketball

Scott Davis previously held the position of head coach at Dominican University and Cal Poly Pomona, and prior to that was formerly an assistant coach at COM from 1997-1999 and 2001-2002.

"Scott is a true professional and one of the best coaches of the game in the region,” said Byrne. “His experience is very impressive and he not only brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to our program, but he is a tremendous teacher and does a great job of motivating students to reach their goals."

Davis described being overwhelmed with excitement at the news of his appointment as head coach and what it means to him both personally and professionally.

“Having been a part of the great success the program saw when it was brought back in 1997 and as it continued, I am looking forward to working hard to get the program back to that level,” said Jones. “I feel very fortunate and thankful to Athletic Director Ryan Byrne for giving me this opportunity at College of Marin. It is evident in my interactions with him that College of Marin Athletics is heading in a great direction and I am so thankful he has put the trust of the women's program in my hands.”

Scott Davis was the youngest head coach in the state when he led Diablo Valley College to a state tournament berth in 1999-2000. He spent time at St. Mary’s College before taking over as the head coach at Dominican University in 2002. In his four years, he compiled an 81-20 record and two conference titles. From 2007-2010 he was the head coach at Cal Poly Pomona and earned a tournament berth in 2010.

Department Philosophy

COM’s Athletic Department provides a broad-based intercollegiate athletics program, which fosters the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional development of a diverse and highly-skilled group of student-athletes. The importance of athletics as an integral part of the college curricular experience places a focus on educating athletes academically, socially, and athletically.

"First and foremost, we view ourselves as a student success program," says Byrne. "We are in the business of creating opportunities for student-athletes. Our coaching staff embodies that philosophy and brings it to life in their work with our student-athletes."
