KENTFIELD/NOVATO, CA — College of Marin Superintendent/President David Wain Coon, EdD, issued the following statement on today’s United States Supreme Court ruling that continues Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA):
“I am pleased with the Supreme Court’s decision to reinstate the full 2012 DACA policy. Given the number of undocumented and DACA students proudly served by College of Marin, and the California Community Colleges system as a whole, we know that access to higher education and work permit eligibility often result in lifesaving wage and employment status improvements. College of Marin will continue to provide a safe, welcoming learning environment and advocate for educational opportunities that are open to all prospective students—regardless of their immigration status.”
Superintendent/President Coon also expressed support for the Supreme Court’s June 15 ruling that the 1964 Civil Rights Act protects gay, lesbian, and transgender employees from discrimination based on sex:
“That makes two great rulings this week. These decisions in favor of protecting LGBTQ+ employees from discrimination and to reinstate DACA illustrate what is at the heart of the matter for College of Marin—that equitable opportunities for education and employment should be accessible to all.”
