This self-care check-in for the new year will be a moment to reflect on your current well-being and actively identify areas where you can prioritize self-care practices, such as sleep, nutrition, exercise, and mental health, as well as set intentions for a healthier and more balanced year ahead! This session is a chance to prioritize your self-care and wellness goals for the rest of the school year.

Busy days go by fast, and we’re already starting a new semester. Let’s take a break, take some deep breaths, and focus on the present and what we can do to help our self-care needs for the Spring 2025 semester and beyond. Use this session to check in with yourself about your wellness needs as we guide you through some simple suggestions and strategies to help you discover what will work best for you.

Using Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor

This session is required for those participating in the Respondus lockdown browser pilot; faculty who are opting not to use Respondus are welcome to attend for informational purposes.  The session will be hosted by our Respondus support team and will provide guidance on how to set up Respondus in a Canvas course, demonstrate Respondus from the student perspective, and provide information on use cases and best practices.  The session will be recorded. Pilot participants who cannot attend will need to watch the video in Canvas prior to accessing Respondus in a course.

In Audre Lorde’s words, “without community there is no liberation.” This presentation covers foundational information about how to support LGBTQ+ students during a politically challenging time.  Participants will have the opportunity to examine their knowledge and critique paradigms and policies that are harmful to LGBTQIA people and gain understanding and strategies that can help cultivate affirming spaces at College of Marin and in our larger communities.

Learning to See Drawing Exercise 

This workshop is a hands-on activity that encourages participants to trust the relationship between looking and drawing. This process reveals the universal relationship between visual skills and the application to other subjects. No prior experience with drawing or charcoal is necessary. (Some mess will be created. Don't wear clothes that shouldn't get dirty).

Designing Writing Prompts in the Age of AI:
How to Clarify Writing Assignments and Encourage Authentic Writing Across the Curriculum

Come learn the features of an effective writing prompt, including how to write a focused question/inquiry, choose potential subheadings, clarify language, address the rhetorical situation (voice, purpose, audience, topic), identify support resources, consider scaffolding activities. The goal is to help instructors design more effective prompts that help students understand the goals of the assignment, connect to their topics, and feel inspired to write authentically. This session is for instructors of all disciplines.

Session Outcome
  • Consider how writing prompts can help students in feeling connected to their topics, and in understanding the critical thinking and writing goals of their assignment. 
  • Understand how writing prompts aid not only students, but also their support resources (tutors, librarians, counselors). 
  • Design a writing prompt with thoughtful and engaging context, a focused guiding question, clear subcategories and requirements, and comprehensible structure. 
  • Consider possible scaffolding activities to help students understand the prompt and the rhetorical situation (writer, audience, topic, purpose).

Understanding Racial Justice and White Supremacy 101: Reflecting Inward to Create Supportive and Safer Spaces

White supremacy is often discussed as a "thing of the past" or a “taboo topic.”  With the pandemic came the stark understanding of how deeply rooted systemic racism and oppression is for marginalized communities, stemming from practices and policies steeped in White supremacy. Join us in a continued conversation about how institutions of higher education are rooted in White supremacy and how we can embody Angela Davis' quote of individually and collectively working to dismantle racist systems. We will strategize on how to create equitable access and support for students and communities who historically and currently experience the most impact. 

Session Outcome
  • Learn about the historical and current context of White supremacy and racial justice in the U.S. higher education system. 
  • Reflect on current practices in teaching and/or positions at the college. 
  • Take away tips and tools to actively dismantle oppressive practices in teaching and/or professional positions.

Supporting Undocumented Students in Uncertain Times

In response to threats by the incoming presidential administration to target the undocumented community, this presentation will provide participants with knowledge, tools, and resources to support undocumented students at COM. We will cover common terms and discuss policies (local, state and federal) protecting undocumented students.  We will also share resources available (on and off-campus) and best practices.

  • Learn about local, state and federal laws that protect undocumented students. 
  • Learn mindful ways of connecting with undocumented students. 
  • Connect undocumented students to resources on and off campus.

Committee Work: Can’t Share Governance Without It

Ready to improve how College of Marin works? Join members of the Governance Review Council for an interactive session focused on improving our Participatory Governance System.  Whether you are currently on a committee or interested in joining one, we’ll explore our current committee structure, share experiences, and contribute ideas for enhancing communication and transparency.  Help ensure that all voices—including students, staff, and faculty—play a vital role in shared governance and our college’s future, including meeting the new accreditation standards.

  • Describe the College of Marin’s Participatory Governance System. 
  • Identify opportunities for improving our shared governance structure and processes. 
  • Develop strategies for clearer and meaningful communication between committees and the broader campus community.

Mandatory Revision in eLUMEN

This workshop will provide step-by-step instructions about how to complete mandatory revision in eLumen for faculty who need a refresher or are new to eLumen.  We will also review criteria for revisions that require a presentation to the Curriculum Committee when there are substantive changes to a course outline of record.

  • Refresh your knowledge of or learn to use eLumen. 
  • Understand when changes require presentations to the Curriculum Committee.

How Might You Teach About (or with) AI?

In this session we’ll look briefly at core approaches to cultivating a healthy skepticism of AI while using AI to support existing learning goals: 

1. We can invite students to critique AI-generated examples related to course material and tailored to student interests. 

2. We can invite students to reflect skeptically on AI feedback on their work. 

3. We can show students the benefits and pitfalls of AI research assistance apps like Perplexity and Elicit. 

Each participant will fill out a template plan and chat with colleagues in breakout groups about what you want to try next in your own courses in relation to AI. 

Session Outcomes
  • Prompt a chatbot for an example or feedback related to course material. 
  • Show students an example of a plausible chatbot response that doesn’t reflect course material accurately. 
  • Describe one way that participants want to try teaching about or with AI this semester.

Using Our New Assessment Dashboard to Identify Equity Gaps

SLOAC will introduce faculty to our new assessment dashboard which provides an easy visual format to view assessment data disaggregated by race/ethnicity and gender.  The workshop will also review how Student Learning Outcomes are measured and reported in eLumen and how faculty can access their own course level and degree assessment results.

  • Describe what makes a good student learning outcome.  
  • Describe how to find course or degree level assessment results. 
  • Describe how assessing outcomes can help faculty identify areas in learning where student subpopulations are not meeting success rates.

What does it mean to be a mentor? In this session we will review participants' journey into teaching and what mentorship supported their teaching practice. In addition, we will review information about College of Marin's Faculty Diversity Internship Program and how participants can support or be part of the program.

  • Describe and promote the Faculty Diversity Internship Program.
  • Reflect on how to support new teachers.
