KENTFIELD, CA—College of Marin is inducting six champions into the Athletic Hall of Fame this weekend, honoring the individuals whose spirit and commitment helped shape the College’s outstanding athletic programs today. The ceremony and banquet will be held on Saturday, October 10, at Embassy Suites in San Rafael. A no-host social hour beginning at 5 p.m. starts the evening off, followed by dinner and the induction ceremony at 6 p.m.
Now in its 6th year, the event honors the achievements of COM athletes while students at the college as well as their later accomplishments—both athletic and in other areas of their lives. The class of 2015 inductees include individuals who have each made rich contributions to the community.
“This event bridges the years between our previous athletic greats to our current student-athletes,” said Steve Berringer, interim athletic director. “We are very proud to honor these people.”
Baseball player Tom Arrington was drafted by the Texas Rangers, opted to attend Texas A&M, and later became a coach and athletic director. All-around athlete John “JD” Dohn played football and was on the track and field team at COM. Dohn won five national championships playing men’s fast-pitch softball. Football and rugby star Tom Elliott was known for playing every single down in a game despite injuries. Elliot went on to coach rugby for the Olympic Club in San Francisco. Mike Fulton played on COM’s basketball team before becoming the women’s basketball coach and coaching at Terra Linda High School. Fulton now serves as director of the girls’ varsity basketball program at San Domenico School. Cross country runner Carl Jensen went on to win numerous competitions before and after earning a Purple Heart while serving in the Vietnam War. Baseball and basketball standout Maureen “Mo” McGrath left the states to compete professionally in a women’s league in New Zealand before returning to the area to coach.
“This ceremony is a special event that allows the community to honor the great achievements of these individuals,” Berringer said. “Our current athletes can learn a lot from our vast athletic history.”
It is also a time to acknowledge the rich tapestry of relationships formed here on campus among student athletes, coaches, and friends of the program.
“All of the inductees have expressed how many relationships were formed at College of Marin and the wonderful opportunities they have had to succeed both athletically and academically,” Berringer said.
Alum John Dohn described his time at College of Marin as “a magical time.”
“I cannot give back what College of Marin gave to me,” Dohn said.
