College of Marin student Zoevina Pariani Delgado will participate in the Race Matters workshop on September 23, 2017, as a criminal justice panelist. This half-day workshop on race will kick-off the fall 2017 Race Matters Dialogue and Educational Series. Led and facilitated by Paul Kivel, a renowned national and international award-winning author, educator, and activist on the issue of race, this workshop will provide participants with a context, analysis, and framework on the various levels and forms of power. It will also offer a safe space for participants to deeply examine the impact that racism has had in their daily lives and to build cross-cultural alliances based on mutual understanding and respect of their differences while working towards a common purpose and goal of working towards racial justice.
Race Matters will also explore ways that white people have been hurt and separated from the conversation about race in order to be full participants, allies and partners towards racial justice with people of color. Providing a shared space for understanding through dialogue and education between people of color and white people can lead to healing from the effects of racism; establish or strengthen cross-cultural alliances; and to work towards community strategies and solutions that can reduce racial disparities and inequities in Marin County’s healthcare, education, criminal justice, economic and environmental housing systems.
