COVID-19 Update - Extension of Remote Instruction and Learning

March 31st, 2020 - 4:26pm

Dear College Community,

First and foremost, I hope you and your family members remain safe and healthy during these unprecedented times.  The ways in which we learn, teach, and work have dramatically changed, and I recognize how stressful this has been for you.  As you practice social distancing, I encourage you to practice good self-care and know that there are resources available to both students and employees to support your wellbeing.

On March 23, following spring break, we moved to remote instruction and student services. On March 27, we had the opportunity to engage with 90 or so faculty members via Zoom and were pleased to learn that while perhaps not perfect, we have been able to ensure the continuity of instruction and service delivery to students during the stay at home order. With the exception of a very small number of individuals considered essential employees, the vast majority are working remotely in support of students and the operations of the College.

On the morning of March 27, the presidents and chancellors of the Bay Area community colleges conferred regarding the status of the remainder of the semester.  After consulting with the other colleges and the leadership of our faculty, I made the decision to continue with remote instruction and student services through the end of the spring semester.  This is consistent with the direction of the majority of “Bay 10” colleges.  In addition, I am very disappointed to report that we will not be having our normal, beloved commencement exercises this year.  Rather, we will be having a special virtual graduation ceremony to celebrate the success of our students.

Given the report today from Marin County Health and Human Services extending the stay at home order through May 3, I believe the decision to extend our important work remotely was prudent and in the best interest and wellbeing of all. I recognize the extension of remote learning will impact each of us differently.  Please know that we are going to continue supporting the efforts of each of you to the absolute best of our abilities.

We are planning two community meetings to get feedback on challenges related to remote learning, teaching, and working.  During COMunity Hour on Monday, April 6, from 12:40 – 1:30 p.m. we will host a conversation with our employees.  During COMunity Hour on Wednesday, April 8, from 12:40 – 1:30 p.m., we will host a conversation with our students.  I hope you will consider joining us.  Call-in information for the meetings will be forthcoming.

In closing, let me again acknowledge that I know how extraordinarily challenging these times have been for you.  To our valued employees, I want to express my profound gratitude to each of you for rising to the occasion so the College can continue serving our students and community.  To our valued students, I want to express my profound gratitude for your patience and perseverance as we work to do our best under these circumstances to ensure you meet your educational goals.

I have full confidence in each of you, and am confident we will come through this stronger as a community!

Be safe and stay healthy!

Respectfully,

David

¡Sigan seguros y sanos!

Con respeto,

David
