Gera Named Head Coach for COM Women’s Volleyball
KENTFIELD, CA—January 19, 2017—Lisa Gera, a former California Interscholastic Federation state champion and Fresno State University setter, has been named women’s volleyball head coach at College of Marin. She takes over for Christina Nelson, who left the program early in the fall season.
A San Jose native, Gera attended Archbishop Mitty High School and played club for City Beach Club in Santa Clara and Vision Volleyball Club in Los Gatos. She went on to Fresno State where she was ranked 9th in digs (935) and 11th all-time in sets played (391).
She is extremely excited about the opportunity to coach at COM, adding that the sport of volleyball provides a great opportunity to empower young women and set them up for future success.
“I am originally from the Bay Area and knew I wanted to settle down here one day,” said Gera. “At College of Marin, I want to create a memorable experience for our student-athletes. My goal as a coach is to help our students thrive academically, socially, and athletically.”
Gera was most recently the lead assistant for the women’s indoor team at Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) as well as the head coach of their women’s beach volleyball team. She held the assistant position for the past four years and started the beach team at SBCC three years ago, serving under current COM athletic director, Ryan Byrne.
“I’m very excited to have someone of Lisa’s caliber come on board,” says Byrne. “Her knowledge of the game, care for the overall development of our student-athletes, and her enthusiasm for volleyball are second to none. I know she is going to take our program to another level.”
Gera’s teams at SBCC were 87-22 in her four years serving as the lead assistant to Ed Gover.
Looking forward, Gera wants to build relationships and get involved with serving the local community. “I want to strive to create a positive atmosphere for young women, and allow athletes to use College of Marin as a stepping stone in order to reach their goals at the four-year level.”
