Dear Students, Faculty, Staff, Administrators, and Members of the College of Marin Community:
Just before the fall semester began, members of the Associated Students of College of Marin (ASCOM) watched with the rest of the country an inhumane act of terrorism unfold in Charlottesville, Virginia, creating a mix of outrage, frustration, and deep sorrow. On behalf of ASCOM, I wish to express our strongest support to those who have been affected by this act of bigotry. Our minds and hearts are with the families of those who have suffered fighting for justice and equality.
Acts such as this serve as another reminder of our responsibility to live out the core values we proudly profess at College of Marin. There is absolutely no place for white supremacy, racism, sexism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, hatred, bigotry, or terrorism—least of all at an institution of higher education. ASCOM is firmly committed to our mission to create a culture of inclusion and safety on our campuses regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, background, ability, or class.
I am writing today to express ASCOM’s support of those in need and for those who seek help for a safe space. Furthermore, victims of or witnesses to such behavior should report them to Campus Police by calling (415) 485-9696 or 911. With the fall 2017 semester underway, ASCOM encourages all members of the College of Marin community to recommit to our core values of inclusion, equity, and safety.
