Hidden Philosophy! Cinematic Nihilism

October 19th, 2017 - 11:58am

Cinematic Nihilism book coverCOM Philosophy Instructor Dr. John Marmysz will discuss his collection of essays; Cinematic Nihilism: Encounters, Confrontations, Overcomings; in a lecture on Thursday, October 26. Just published in September 2017, the essays on film and nihilism expose and illustrate the possibility that an ongoing engagement with nihilistic alienation may contribute to the value of life as opposed to detracting from it. Past scholarship scrutinizing nihilism in the media through the over-emphasis of its negative and destructive aspects is challenged by Marmysz through case studies of popular films. The book presents the constructive potential of cinematic nihilism, casting it as a phenomenon that need not be overcome. John Marmysz holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from SUNY Buffalo.
