COM Nominated for Joe Garbarino Green Business Award

Award highlights extraordinary efforts to adopt sustainability principles

KENTFIELD / NOVATO, CA—April 6, 2018—Last night College of Marin was among 12 nominees for the Joe Garbarino Green Business of the Year Award at the 34th Annual State of the City Dinner hosted by the San Rafael Chamber.

Each year, the San Rafael Chamber recognizes businesses and organizations that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to San Rafael, especially in the areas of leadership, giving back to the community, and making significant contributions to strengthening the local economy. Nominees for the Joe Garbarino Green Business Award have demonstrated extraordinary efforts to embed sustainable practices in their business operations and philosophies.

The College was nominated for its commitment to sustainability in facility design, modernization, and construction; engaging students, staff, and the community in sustainability initiatives; and interweaving curricula and projects that focus on sustainability and green careers through the Energize Colleges program.

This commitment to environmental responsibility is at the heart of the College’s institutional philosophy, as it is included prominently in its mission and vision statements.

“We are proud of our reputation as an early adopter of sustainability and green practices,” said Superintendent/President Dr. David Wain Coon. “As an educational institution, the Board of Trustees and College leaders believe strongly in seeking out opportunities to lead by example and minimize our environmental impact.”

During the awards ceremony, local nonprofit organization Guide Dogs for the Blind was announced as the winner of the Joe Garbarino Award.

“Congratulations to Guide Dogs for the Blind and all of this year’s nominees,” said Coon. “It is an honor to be nominated and recognized for our ongoing efforts to reduce our carbon footprint wherever possible.”
