COM Launches Navigate Platform

Guidance for students from registration throughout their educational path

KENTFIELD, CA—January 26, 2017— Last night College of Marin (COM) launched a new platform aimed at making the course registration process more user-friendly. The platform will help enrolled students determine their educational goals, define how to reach them, and keep them on track with reminders and opportunities.

The launch is the culmination of 18 months of work, which included a review of existing practices, customization to match student needs and activities, and a commitment to improving the student onboarding experience. Under the guidance of Senior Vice President of Student Learning and Student Services Jonathan Eldridge, a number of offices and departments contributed to the effort. An immense amount of vision, responsiveness, and attention to detail from Information Technology, Enrollment Services, Outreach and School Relations, Student Activities and Advocacy, and the Office of Instructional Management have gone into the project’s implementation.

“Navigate provides our students an interactive, intuitive, user-friendly way to explore majors, plan a course of study, and see up-to-date information on local and regional career opportunities relating to their major of choice,” says Eldridge. “It also ‘nudges’ them with texts and emails so deadlines never get missed.”

As of this morning, when students log in to the MyCOM Portal they now see a new tab—Navigate for Success—which takes them to the Navigate platform. Once there, they can explore majors and career opportunities. Drag and drop tools allow students to build a class schedule that fits their availability and goals.

In addition to a more user-friendly experience for students, Navigate’s guidance and prompts can also save students time, money, and energy while maximizing their success.
Future expansion of the platform’s capability is planned, including functionality such as one-click registration as well as features which provide extensive analytic and interactive capabilities for counselors and other College offices.
