KENTFIELD / NOVATO, CA—October 15, 2018—College of Marin (COM) joins the California Community Colleges in supporting Undocumented Students Week of Action October 15-19, 2018. The Week of Action is a statewide, student-led campaign calling on Congress to pass a permanent solution to codify the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program with a pathway to citizenship for California’s undocumented students.
COM joins over 75 California community colleges and partner organizations—including the Chief Executive Officers of California Community Colleges, Community College League of California, the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges, the Student Senate for California Community Colleges, and the California Community College Trustees Board, to name a few—in this week of advocacy.

“College of Marin continues to stand resolutely with its sister colleges, embracing inclusiveness and diversity as core values of the California Community Colleges system,” said Superintendent/President Dr. David Wain Coon. “We are committed to providing equitable opportunities for all members of our community and we strive to remove barriers to student success. Participating in the Week of Action is another way for us to let undocumented students know that they are an integral part of our community.”

All of the Undocumented Students Week of Action webinars are free and take place at the Kentfield Campus.

In the weeks following the election of President Trump, many within the campus community expressed serious concern about the wellbeing of COM students. On January 17, 2017, the COM Board of Trustees passed a resolution in support of inclusiveness, diversity, and immigrant students. After the Trump administration announced the rescission of DACA in September 2017, COM joined the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office in reaffirming the institution’s commitment to providing students access to educational opportunities without regard to their immigration status or that of their parents by passing a resolution in support of codifying DACA into federal law.

COM has grouped resources for undocumented students online. For more information, contact Director of Student Activities and Advocacy Sadika Sulaiman Hara at (415) 485-9375.
