College of Marin Offers Food Safety Training and Certification

NOVATO, CA—November 21, 2016—In a step to further its career education, College of Marin has added a specialty class, Food Safety for Managers, created for the region’s food service establishments. California State Health Code requires that one person in each food service operation maintain a Food Safety Manager Certification.

The Food Safety for Managers class is an intensive one or two-day training, followed by the Food Safety Manager examination. The training is designed to ensure that restaurants and other food service establishments follow health regulations to reduce risk of food-borne illness. Food Managers must renew their certification every five years.

The course underscores the importance of food safety. The Center for Disease Control reports that each year one out of six Americans (that's 48 million people) gets sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die from food-borne diseases. Reducing food-borne illness by 10 percent would keep 5 million Americans from getting sick each year.

College of Marin’s food safety classes are offered once a month at the Indian Valley Campus in Novato. Using the National Restaurant Association’s ServSafe program—a nationally-recognized training and certification program that meets California state law—the College is helping to meet the demands of busy food service professionals who need to obtain certification and ensure food safety for their operations.

"Adding food safety is a great addition to the College's career and technical education training programs,"  says Dean of Career and Technical Education Elizabeth Pratt. “Offering this certification class is another example of the College responding to meet the region’s career education needs for achieving a thriving labor market,”

The Novato-based Indian Valley Campus offers 17 different career technical education programs, as well as transferable general education classes, and continues to expand classes in hospitality as well as other in-demand careers.
