Black Tie and Blue Jeans Gala Benefits COM STEAM Programs

June 7th, 2019 - 8:39pm

KENTFIELD / NOVATO, CA—June 7, 2019—Award-winning country music star Joe Nichols will be the headliner for College of Marin’s (COM) first Black Tie and Blue Jeans gala on Friday, August 30, 2019, in the James Dunn Theatre. Leaving Austin, a band that hails from Visalia, California, will open the show. Proceeds from the gala will support COM science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) programs. Early-bird tickets are on sale now through Eventbrite.

In California, STEM occupations make up over one fifth of the state’s overall employment, with growth expected through 2024. Considering the projected growth of computer occupations is at 12.5 percent and those in the areas of math and science projected at 28.2 percent, it is clear that students need an education that has evolved in response to the needs of these sectors.

The College also understands the importance of including arts to round out the STEAM equation. Education in the arts complements STEM learning by adding the crucial elements of critique, inquiry, and innovation—all of which contribute to a student’s creative problem-solving skill set.

“As educators we are responsible for providing an education that changes with the times to meet the needs of our economy, and we envision the proceeds creating more hands-on, experiential learning opportunities,” said Superintendent/President David Wain Coon. “The event is an entertaining and enjoyable way for the community to support these programs.”
